What voltage does a boat lift use?
Residential boat lifts run on standard single-phase household power. Jet-ski and smaller boat lifts commonly run on 110V, while larger, high-capacity lifts often need 220V for the bigger motor. The motor's nameplate is what sets the requirement for your specific unit, and either way the lift belongs on its own dedicated, GFCI-protected circuit.
110V or 220V — what decides it
The motor, not the boat and not the brand. Most residential cable lifts run on standard single-phase AC, and the pattern on this coast is straightforward:
- Jet-ski and smaller boat lifts — commonly 110V (120V)
- Mid-size lifts for bay boats and center consoles — 110V or 220V, by motor
- Large, high-capacity lifts — often 220V (240V) to drive the bigger motor
“110V” and “220V” are the everyday names for standard 120V and 240V household circuits. A heavier lift draws more, which is why it tends to step up — but two lifts of the same capacity can differ by motor, so the unit’s nameplate is the last word. Your electrician sizes the circuit and breaker to that actual unit; we don’t publish a number for yours we haven’t read.
It matters most when a lift is being replaced. Owners often assume the new lift can reuse whatever the old one was plugged into, and on a straight like-for-like swap it sometimes can. Step up in capacity, though, and the motor may want a different circuit than the dock already has — which is a question worth asking before the lift shows up, not after.
Why the circuit matters as much as the voltage
A lift should sit on its own dedicated, GFCI-protected circuit. The dedicated breaker keeps the lift from fighting dock lights or outlets for capacity, and it means a fault on the lift trips the lift instead of half your dock.

Getting power out to it
Voltage is the easy half; the run down the dock is the real work. Wet-rated wire in conduit, weatherproof enclosures, correct grounding and bonding, and heavier wire on a long run so voltage drop doesn’t starve the motor. That is licensed electrical work, and new circuits generally need a permit and inspection.
