How long do boat lift cables last?

The short answer

There is no fixed number. Boat lift cable life in Southwest Florida salt water varies with how often the lift cycles, how well the cables are rinsed, and how much salt spray and sun they take. Inspect them regularly and replace at the first warning sign — broken strands, kinks, rust bleed, or uneven spooling — rather than on a calendar.

What shortens cable life

Salt, cycles, and neglect, roughly in that order. Cables are the highest-consequence component on a lift and the one the environment attacks hardest:

  • Salt water and salt air. Every cycle pulls saltwater into the cable, and it keeps working between the strands where nothing rinses it out on its own.
  • Cycle count. A lift that runs daily wears faster than a snowbird’s lift that runs a dozen times a year.
  • Running at or near the rating. Overloading loads every strand harder. Capacity margin is cable life.
  • Misalignment. A cable riding the edge of a pulley groove, a worn or seized sheave, or uneven spooling on the drum chews a cable from the outside.
  • Sun and standing water. UV on everything nearby, and drums that stay wet after every run.
  • Storms. Any storm loading is a reason to inspect before the next cycle.

What to look for on every inspection

Look at the whole run — drum, every pulley, and both end fittings — not just the visible middle. The tells:

  • Broken strands or “fish-hooks” standing out from the lay
  • Flattened, kinked, or crushed sections
  • Rust bleed where there was none before
  • Slack in a cable that should be under tension, or a cradle sitting out of level
  • Uneven or crossed spooling on the drum
  • Any cable sitting outside its pulley groove

Why cables get replaced on condition, not on a schedule

Because two lifts on the same canal can be years apart. Publishing a single lifespan would be a made-up number, and a made-up number is worse than no number here — it invites somebody to skip an inspection because the calendar says they have time. How do I know when a boat lift cable needs replacing?

Look for broken strands or fish-hooks standing out from the lay of the cable, flattened or kinked sections, rust bleeding where there was none before, slack in a cable that should be tight, uneven spooling on the drum, and any cable that has jumped out of its pulley groove. Does rinsing the cables actually extend their life?

It helps. Salt left to dry on and inside a cable keeps working long after the water is gone, and the damage happens where you cannot see it — between the strands and inside the drum wrap. A regular freshwater rinse of cables, drums, and pulleys is the cheapest maintenance on a lift.
