Why does a tiki hut shed thatch in a hurricane?
Because it is built to. Natural palm thatch is a porous roof — wind moves through it instead of pressing against it, and under extreme load fronds tear away rather than the whole roof levering off the posts.
A sealed, solid roof on an open-sided structure behaves like a wing in a hurricane. Wind gets underneath, pressure builds, and all of that uplift goes straight into the frame and the posts. Thatch spills that energy instead of collecting it. So a hut that comes through a serious blow looking thin, patchy, or scalped on the windward side has usually just paid the price it was designed to pay.
How much comes off varies with the storm, the age and thickness of the thatch, the material, and how exposed your hut sits — there is no normal amount, and anyone quoting you one is guessing. Synthetic thatch is a different system, fastened panel by panel, and it behaves differently in wind.

What should you check before hurricane season?
Walk the hut in the spring and put hands on three things: the posts, the connections, and the strapping. Almost everything that fails in a storm was already marginal months earlier.
- Posts at the ground line and waterline. Probe for soft or punky wood, splitting, and insect damage. Push on each post and feel for movement. Check the soil or deck at the base for erosion and voids.
- Frame-to-post connections. Bolts, brackets, and through-fasteners should be tight with no elongated holes, no gaps opening, and no rust bleeding out of a fitting.
- Hurricane strapping and ties. Salt air is hard on metal. Light surface staining is one thing; strapping that is flaking, thinned, or pitted is another.
- The ridge and cap. The ridge is usually the first place a thatch roof starts coming apart, and an aged, sagging roof sheds sooner and leaks worse.

Fix what you find in the spring. Once a storm is in the forecast cone, crews across the coast fill up and materials slow down. The easy version of that repair has a window, and the window is before the season.
What do you do when a storm is actually coming?
Strip everything loose out from under and around the hut, and leave the roof completely alone.
Do not tarp it, wrap it, board it, or run straps over the thatch. This is the single most common mistake we see, and it makes the outcome worse rather than better. Everything else is about removing ammunition:
- Furniture and fixtures. Stools, tables, chairs, hammocks, hanging décor, signage, wind chimes, and string lights all become projectiles.
- Fans and light fixtures. Take down whatever is genuinely removable. Kill power to the hut circuit at the breaker before you touch anything electrical, and leave it off — the same rule that governs your dock lighting before a storm.
- Everything stored underneath. Coolers, grills, kayaks, paddleboards, buckets, planters, dock carts.
- The surrounding deck. Clear it so nothing gets launched into the posts.
- Electronics. Speakers, TVs, and anything with a plug come inside.
A clean, empty hut with sound posts is in the best position it can be in. And if an evacuation order comes for your zone, that order outranks every item on this list. Go.
What should you look at after the storm?
Safety first, documentation second, diagnosis third — in that order.

Once it is safe to be out there, photograph everything before you clean up — wide shots and close-ups of the roof, each post, the connections, and the debris field. Then read the hut from a distance: is it plumb, is the ridge line straight, is the frame still square? Then go close and check post bases for scour and washout, brackets for movement, and straps for failure.
