Can a lift be widened for a wider boat?
Often, within limits. Bunks and cradle beams can usually be re-spaced for a modestly wider hull, and that covers most upgrades. What cannot be adjusted is the gap between your pilings, which fixes the lift's overall width. Past that point the pilings have to move, and a wider boat is normally a heavier boat, so capacity gets re-checked too.
Where the width on a lift actually adjusts
A lift is a stack of parts, and only some of them move. Working from the hull down:
- Bunks bolt to the cradle beams and slide across them inside a range set by how long those beams are. Re-spreading the bunks is the normal answer to a few extra inches of beam, and it is the same adjustment we make whenever a hull’s support points change. - Guide posts travel outward with the bunks, and they need to end up somewhere a wider hull can still drive between them with wind on the beam.
- Cradle beams can sometimes be changed for longer ones, which buys real width, but only when the frame and the drive were specified with that headroom to begin with.
- The frame itself does not stretch. Its span is decided by where the pilings stand, and it has been decided since install day.
The pilings are the real ceiling
A cable lift hangs off its pilings, so the piling spread is the outside limit of every dimension above it. When the new boat needs more room than that spread allows, the honest scope stops being an adjustment and becomes a piling job: pull or drive pilings at the new spread, set deep enough for what your canal bottom is made of, and then reset the lift on them.

Width and capacity are two separate questions
A wider boat is almost always a heavier boat, and beam tells you nothing about pounds. Rated capacity is the manufacturer’s figure off the data plate, which is the subject of how much weight a boat lift holds, and the number it has to cover is fully loaded weight: hull, engines, full fuel at roughly 6 pounds per gallon for gasoline, water, batteries and gear, with roughly 20 to 30 percent of margin on top. A cradle widened to hold a boat the lift was never rated to carry is a worse position than a lift that plainly does not fit, because it looks solved.
