Where can a generator actually run?
Outdoors, on dry footing, well clear of the house — and nowhere else. Not in a garage with the door up. Not in a boathouse. Not on a screened lanai, not in a carport, not in a shed, and not under a covered dock or tiki hut.
Carbon monoxide is the reason, and it deserves plain language: no color, no smell, no warning. It builds up in enclosed and partly enclosed spaces, drifts into houses through open windows, doors, and vents, and by the time someone feels sick they are often too impaired to act. Every season this is one of the ways people die after the storm has passed, in homes that came through the wind fine.
Practical version:
- Run it outside, well away from the house and away from any opening or vent, with the exhaust pointed away from occupied space.
- Keep it on dry, level, solid ground, out of standing water — and off the dock entirely.
- Shut it down and let it cool before refueling, and store fuel away from the house.
- If the only place you can put it is covered or enclosed, or the only dry ground is out on the dock, the correct answer is that you don’t run it.
Consider a carbon-monoxide alarm inside the house part of your storm kit, not an afterthought.
Why can’t you plug a generator into an outlet?
Because backfeeding a panel through an outlet can push power back out onto the utility line and can kill someone working on it. It also routes generator power through your house without the protection your main breaker exists to provide. There is no version of this that becomes safe with a homemade cord, a careful plan, or an assurance that the main is off.
The only homeowner-safe use of a portable generator is running appliances plugged directly into the generator with cords rated for outdoor use, sized for what you’re plugging in, kept out of water and out of doorways.
If you want generator power on your household circuits — the thing people are usually reaching for — that is a transfer switch, and a transfer switch is licensed-electrician work, permitted and inspected like any other panel job. Not a weekend project, and not something to attempt with a storm in the forecast. Do that job in the spring or don’t do it.
Can you run your boat lift on generator power?
Technically sometimes, practically rarely, and after a storm the answer is usually “wait.” Three things stack up against it:

What about dock lights and dock outlets during an outage?
They stay off too, and they’re the last thing to come back on. Low-voltage dock lighting, fish lights, transformers, and dock receptacles all live in the splash zone, and after high water they’re in the same category as the lift circuit: off at the breaker, inspected by a licensed electrician, repaired or replaced as needed before anything is energized. That order matters more than it sounds — nobody swims by a dark dock, and plenty of people have been hurt near a lit one that shouldn’t have been on.
When does the dock get its power back?
In this order, with no shortcuts: utility service is restored, a licensed electrician inspects and clears the dock and lift circuits, damaged fixtures, conduit, and wiring runs get replaced, and only then does the dock come back to life.
