Boat Lifts in Fort Myers: Canals, Depths & the Right Setup
Fort Myers is the first place on this coast where river frontage and canal frontage are genuinely different problems. Here is what each one asks of a lift, and what the water actually does.

Most cities on this coast give you one kind of waterfront. Fort Myers gives you two, and they are not variations on a theme.
You are either on the Caloosahatchee itself, with open estuary in front of you, or on a tributary canal running off it, with fixed banks a stone’s throw away. Same city, same contractor, genuinely different problem. River frontage and canal frontage diverge enough here to be worth separating, so that is how this page is organized.
Before any of it, one piece of housekeeping specific to here: the permitting authority for your lift does not follow your mailing address. What the river actually is at Fort Myers
Downstream of the Franklin Lock, the Caloosahatchee is not a river in the freshwater sense. FDEP describes that stretch as the saline, tidal, estuarine portion, and state water managers note that the water between the lock and Shell Point can be fresh, marine or brackish depending on conditions. So the honest description of your water is brackish and variable, not “saltwater canal” and not “river”.
Scale, in the agencies’ own terms rather than ours: state water managers give the estuary as widening to about 8,200 feet near its mouth and averaging about four feet deep through its downstream reach. That is the character of a whole estuary, not a statement about the water in front of your house. If you catch yourself doing arithmetic with it to work out whether your boat floats at your dock, stop. That is the site visit’s job.
What it does tell you is the shape of the exposure. Broad and shallow is a materially different setting than a narrow dredged canal with banks close on both sides, which is why a river-frontage lift gets planned as an exposed structure and a canal lift as a sheltered one.
One more piece of character: the marked channel through town is the Okeechobee Waterway, a working navigation corridor rather than a residential dead end.
The tide is smaller than you think
This is the single most useful correction we can offer a new Fort Myers owner, and it runs the opposite direction from most people’s assumption.
NOAA’s tide station at Fort Myers on the Caloosahatchee publishes a mean range of about one foot. Not two or three. Out toward San Carlos Bay and Matanzas Pass, NOAA’s published ranges grow to roughly one and three quarters to two and a half feet, so the swing genuinely increases as you move toward open water, but at Fort Myers itself it is modest.
That changes a real design decision. Lift travel covers the difference between the boat floating on and the boat sitting clear of the water, and the tidal component of that is smaller here than most new owners expect. It does not shrink the importance of depth; it moves the emphasis onto depth itself and away from the swing.
To be explicit, because this is where people get hurt: those figures describe the ordinary daily tide. A storm, a wind event or a surge is a different phenomenon that a tide range does not describe at all. That belongs with storm surge on this coast, not with lift sizing.
Depth, which we are not going to guess at
Depth at your slip, at the bottom of the tide, is the number that sets the rest of the setup: pile length, cradle height, how much travel the lift needs, and whether a standard four-post layout is right at all.
We do not publish depths for Fort Myers water. Not for the river, not for the canals, not for a street. Two constraints that are specific to this water
Air draft, permanently. There is no drawbridge between Fort Myers and the Gulf. Every crossing on the way out is a fixed span, so nothing opens, nothing is scheduled, and no amount of patience changes the number. We are not going to print a clearance figure: a number off a web page is not a navigation authority, and a stale one gets somebody’s hardtop. Work from current charts and your own measured air draft, and build that into the boat decision before it becomes a lift decision.
A slow-speed band along the shore. A federal manatee rule requires watercraft to proceed at slow speed year-round within a shoreline buffer extending roughly 1,320 feet out from shore, along a reach of about 6.8 miles of the river. That band is precisely the water a river-frontage dock sits in. Practically, it means your approach to the lift is always a slow one, so the setup that works is the one you can place a boat onto without leaning on the throttle: guide posts where you actually need them, bunks set to your hull, and a cradle you can find in a crosswind.
Choosing the lift
Sizing does not change with the frontage or the city. A lift is chosen on fully loaded weight, not hull length: boat, engines, full fuel, water, batteries and the gear you never unload, with roughly 20 to 30 percent of margin on top. Gasoline runs about six pounds a gallon, so a hundred-gallon tank is six hundred pounds most people forget. On covering it: a canopy or a boathouse is a permitting question as well as a purchase, because FDEP counts roofs and boat-cover canopies in the over-water area a project is measured by.
