A boat lift is the most mechanically complex thing on your dock — frame, drive, cables, sheaves, and cradle, all bolted to pilings and living in salt air. In a tropical system it’s also the piece with the most ways to go sideways: the boat can shift, the cradle can shift, a canopy catches wind like a wing, and the motor can end up wet with a live circuit behind it.

What should you do to your boat lift before hurricane season?
Get the lift into genuinely good mechanical condition in the spring, while the water is calm and crews have availability. Almost every storm failure we’re called out to started at a weak point that was already there. Season here runs June 1 through November 30, so this walk belongs in April or May:
- Cables — fraying, rust bleed, flat spots, or a strand standing proud. See cable replacement warning signs.
- Sheaves and pulleys — turning freely, or grooved, seized, wobbling?
- Cradle, bunks, and carpet — worn bunks let a hull work around.
- Fasteners and brackets — every bolt, bracket, and piling mount.
- Pilings — cracks, splintering, softness at the waterline, or a new lean.
- Motor and control box — corrosion, cracked housings, a box mounted low enough for water to reach.

Boat on the lift or boat on a trailer — how do you decide?
Work the same three questions every time, and answer them early. Anyone handing you a universal verdict hasn’t seen your rig.
- Where does water go at your address? Surge is site-specific and not something to guess at. Watch National Hurricane Center forecasts and your county’s emergency management alerts, and understand how water moves on a canal — see how storm surge works here.
- What does your lift’s manufacturer say? Storm position, whether the lift is rated to hold a boat in those conditions, and whether tie-downs are approved.
- What does your policy say? Coverage can read differently for a boat on a lift, on a trailer, or in storage. Confirm with your agent before the season, not the night before.

What about the cradle, bunks, and straps?
The goal is that the boat and the cradle behave as one piece. How you get there is rig-specific.
- Seat the boat properly — centered on the bunks, fore and aft where your manual says, no weight hanging off a corner.
- Let rain leave. Water fills a bilge fast, and that weight lands on the cradle and frame. Many owners pull the drain plug and clear the scuppers so rain drains instead of loading the lift. Check that nothing on your rig depends on that plug being in.
- Tie-downs are a manufacturer question. Some makers specify straps from the boat to the lift frame; others don’t want that load on the frame at all. If straps are approved, marine-rated ratchet straps beat rope or bungees, and pad them where they cross the hull. Confirm the approach with the manufacturer and your insurer.
- Strip everything loose — canvas, bimini, cushions, electronics, fenders, coolers, rods. Canvas is a sail, and whatever blows off your dock lands on somebody’s.
Do the canopy panels come off?
Usually yes for canvas and removable panels, usually no for a hard roof — and the deciding vote belongs to whoever made it.
A canopy is a wing: the largest surface on the lift, and the first thing wind gets hold of.
- Know which kind you have. Canvas and snap-in panels generally come off. A permanent metal roof does not, and improvising with one is how people get hurt.
- Removal is a daylight job with a ladder and a second person, over water. Decide days out — if there isn’t time to do it safely, don’t.
- Have somewhere to put them. Panels stacked on the dock are just organized debris.
- The frame matters as much as the fabric. Bent bows and corroded fasteners are pre-season repairs.
Confirm what your canopy and lift manufacturers expect, and ask your agent whether removal is something your policy assumes.
Why does the lift power go off at the breaker?
Because a wet motor on a live circuit is a hazard to you and to anyone in the water, and because nothing should be able to cycle the lift while you’re away.
Shut the lift’s dedicated circuit off at the panel breaker — not just the switch at the dock — and bring the remote or control box inside and dry. Afterward the rule stays just as simple: the circuit stays off. No testing the switch, no drying it out and trying it, no standing in water near a dock circuit. What’s the right order to check a lift after the storm?
Look before you touch, and treat the switch as the last step, not the first.
- Stay off anything that might not hold you. Assume every downed line is live, and look from dry ground before walking out.
- Leave the power off. Yes, still off.
- Read the structure from land — pilings still plumb, or pushed and scoured? Frame racked or bent? Cradle shifted, cable unspooled or jumped a sheave? A waterline mark on the motor or box?
- Photograph everything before anything moves. Wide and close, several angles. Documentation requirements vary by policy, so ask your agent what they want to see.
