Why the label on the forecast is a poor guide to what your dock is about to experience — and what actually decides how hard you prepare.

Every season, the same conversation happens on every canal in Southwest Florida. It’s only a tropical storm. And the prep gets lighter, the gear stays on the dock, and sometimes that’s fine — and sometimes the owner spends October picking decking out of the mangroves.

The category is not a useless number. It’s just a number about wind, and wind is not what does most of the damage to docks, lifts, and seawalls here.

What does the category actually tell you?

It tells you about sustained wind speed, and nothing else. It does not tell you how much water is coming, how long the wind will blow from one direction, what the tide is doing when the storm arrives, or how exposed your particular stretch of canal happens to be.

Those four things are what decide whether your dock has a bad day. A storm’s rank correlates with them loosely, and “loosely” is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

So what should you actually scale to?

Three things, in this order.

Water level. This is the one that matters most and the one owners look at least. A storm’s push, the tide it lands on, and how long it holds a direction all stack together. Duration and direction. A fast-moving system does its work and leaves. A slow one that sits offshore and blows onshore across multiple tide cycles keeps pushing water in without letting it drain back out. Slow and moderate beats fast and strong, from a dock’s point of view.

Your exposure. Two docks a mile apart can have completely different storms. What matters is fetch — the distance of open water the wind gets to build waves across before it reaches you. A dock at the end of a long open run takes chop that a dock in a short protected finger canal never sees. If you read one thing about your own address, make it canal fetch and waves.

What stays the same regardless?

The reason so much of the list doesn’t scale is that it’s cheap. Putting the dock box, the cushions, the ladder, and the grill away takes twenty minutes and costs nothing. Skipping it because the forecast says “tropical storm” saves you twenty minutes and risks the whole inventory plus whatever it hits on the way past.

Where does the real mistake happen?

Not in the prep. In the standing down.

An owner preps properly for a storm that turns, then preps a little less for the next one, then a little less again. By the fourth system of a season the gear never came back in and the straps never came back out. That’s a fatigue failure, not a judgment failure, and knowing it’s coming is most of the defense against it. It’s why our season calendar treats late season as its own distinct problem.

The other mistake is treating “weaker” as “safe to be here for.” It isn’t, and that call isn’t yours or ours — it belongs to county emergency management, and their orders are built around water, not wind. The simplest way to think about it

Ask what the water is going to do, not what the storm is called. If the answer is “come up over the seawall and stay there for a while,” it doesn’t matter what letter grade the forecast gave it — your prep is a hurricane’s worth of prep.

Do I need to prepare for a tropical storm the same way as a hurricane?

For the things that matter to a dock, largely yes. Loose items still become projectiles, water still rises, and hardware still fails at whatever its weakest point is. The parts of your routine that scale down are the ones about extreme wind — the rest of the checklist stays. Treating a tropical storm as a non-event is one of the more common ways owners on this coast lose gear.

Why does a weaker storm sometimes cause more damage?

Because of when it arrives and where it sits. Water level is the product of the storm, the tide, and how long the wind pushes in one direction. A slow storm that parks offshore and blows onshore across two tide cycles can stack more water into a canal system than a faster, stronger one that passes through quickly on a falling tide. What actually damages docks — wind or water?

On this coast, water does most of it. Wind takes canopies, thatch, and anything loose. Water lifts decking off its frame, floats boats off lifts, scours the sand out from under seawall toes, and works pilings loose in their holes. How do I know how exposed my canal is?

Look at how much open water sits between you and the direction the wind will be coming from. A dock at the end of a long, straight run of open water takes a very different beating than one tucked into a short, protected finger canal, even on the same day in the same storm. Can I skip evacuating for a tropical storm?

That is never a call to make from a category number, and it is not a call we're in a position to make for you. Evacuation orders are issued by your county emergency management based on water, not wind rank. If your zone is called, you go.
