Every storm season the same question comes in: should I strap the boat down on the lift? It is a fair question with an unsatisfying answer, because the strap is the part everyone focuses on and it is rarely the part that decides the outcome.

What follows is how to think about it: what securing a boat is trying to prevent, why bunk condition decides more than what goes over the hull, and where general advice honestly runs out. We will not hand you a tie-down pattern. There is no universal one, and anybody who offers one without seeing your rig is guessing.

What is securing the boat actually trying to prevent?

Two different things, and they fail in different directions.

Lateral walking. Wind, chop, and wake push the hull sideways. A boat that shifts a little, then a little more, works off its bunks and ends up hanging on a cradle arm, dropped between bunks, or off the lift entirely. Restraint that limits side-to-side movement genuinely helps here, and that is where most of the real benefit lives.

Vertical float-off. If water rises above the hull’s waterline, the boat becomes a boat again. Buoyancy is not a force you argue with using webbing. Restraint either lets go, or it holds — and holding transfers that buoyancy into the cradle beams, cables, and pilings, structures built to carry the boat downward, not to hold it under.

Why do bunks and cradle geometry matter more than people think?

Because the lift carries the whole boat through a very small number of contact points, and points that are wrong on a calm Tuesday are worse in a storm. Walk your lift and look at the boring things:

  • Bunk condition — soft or punky boards, carpet worn through to bare wood, fasteners backing out, brackets with rust blooming at the welds.
  • Bunk position — bunks should bear under the hull’s structure, not under thin unsupported panels. Bunks still set for a previous boat are a common find.
  • Even bearing — does the hull sit down on every bunk, or is one carrying more than its share?
  • Centering — a boat that is not centered has less room to move before it is off.
  • Cradle squareness — cradle beams out of alignment load the bunks unevenly no matter how well the bunks themselves are set.

What about chafe and hardware?

Anything under tension against an edge saws through itself. With a boat working back and forth for hours, chafe is not a slow process at the margins — it is the failure. Wherever webbing crosses a rail, a cleat horn, a bunk bracket, or a cradle beam edge, protection matters.

Hardware deserves the same scrutiny, because a load path is only as good as its weakest piece. Strength in the webbing is irrelevant if it is hooked to something never intended as a hard point. Look at both ends and everything between, on the boat and on the lift. Salt has been working on all of it, and dissimilar metals in a wet connection corrode faster than either would alone — which is why lift hardware is specified as a system rather than assembled from the drawer. Can securing the boat make things worse?

Yes, and it is worth saying plainly rather than burying.

Restraint that holds a buoyant hull down puts that force somewhere. Lift manufacturers hold specific and differing positions on this, and the difference depends on how the cradle, cables, and beams on your rig are built. That is not something we can generalize for you.

So what should you actually do?

Get three answers before the season starts, not during a watch.

  1. Your lift manufacturer’s storm guidance, for your model. This is the document that governs. If you do not have it, the manufacturer or your installer can usually produce it.
  2. Your insurer’s requirements. Some policies carry conditions about how a vessel is secured. Confirm with your agent or carrier — that is their call, not ours.
  3. An honest condition report on the lift. Bunks, cradle, cables, motors, hardware, and the pilings it all hangs on. That part we can do.

That depends on your specific lift, and the answer genuinely differs between manufacturers. Some publish storm guidance that includes securing the vessel; others specifically advise against restraining a boat to the cradle, because of how force transfers into the beams, cables, and pilings if the water rises. Find your model's guidance and follow it, and confirm any requirements your insurance policy carries with your agent or carrier.

Do straps stop a boat from floating off a lift?

Not in any dependable way. If water rises above the hull's waterline, buoyancy takes over, and webbing does not out-argue buoyancy. What restraint does in that scenario is transfer the load somewhere else — into the cradle, the cables, the beams, and ultimately the pilings, none of which were designed to hold a boat under water. That is exactly why manufacturers differ on the question.

How do I know if my bunks are set correctly?

The hull should bear evenly across all bunks, with the bunks under the hull's structural areas rather than under thin unsupported panels, and the boat centered on the cradle. Common problems we find are bunks still positioned for a previous boat, carpet worn through to bare wood, soft or punky boards, and brackets rusting at the welds. If one side of the hull sits noticeably higher, something is off and it is worth correcting before storm season, not during it.

What is chafe protection and where does it matter?

Chafe protection is anything that keeps a loaded strap from wearing through where it crosses a hard edge — a rail, a cleat horn, a bunk bracket, the edge of a cradle beam. Under storm loading a boat works back and forth for hours, and a strap sawing across an edge does not fail gradually at the end of that; it is the whole failure. Every place webbing touches something hard is a place to think about.
