Pilings are the part of a dock that people look at least and depend on most. Decking is visible. Hardware is visible. Pilings mostly disappear into the water, and as long as the dock feels solid, they get no attention at all.
After a storm, that habit is a problem — because the way pilings fail here is almost entirely out of sight.
How does a piling actually hold?
Not by sitting in a hole. A driven piling holds because the soil it was driven through grips it along its whole buried length, and because the structure above ties it to its neighbors. It’s friction, not foundation.
That matters for one reason: anything that disturbs the soil reduces the grip, and the piling looks exactly the same afterward. Surge moves an enormous volume of water in and back out, and moving water carries sand. Uplift from water pushing up under a deck tries to pull pilings straight up out of their holes. Neither leaves a mark you can see from the dock.
So a post-storm piling inspection is not “does it look broken.” It’s “has it moved, and is it still moving.”
What does a lean tell you?
That it moved, and roughly which way the load went. Sight down the row from shore. Pilings are rarely perfect, so what you’re looking for is a piling out of line with its neighbors, or out of line with where it used to be.
Two other tells are more reliable than eyeballing the angle:
The waterline. Growth, staining, and weathering leave a line on every piling that sits at a consistent height across the row. If one piling’s line is now higher or lower than the ones beside it, that piling has moved vertically — it came up, or it went down. That’s a serious finding and an easy one to spot.
The connections. Look where framing meets the piling. Fresh gaps, crushed or split wood around bolts, bright unweathered wood where something shifted, fasteners backed out or elongating their holes — all of it says the piling and the structure moved relative to each other.
What does a wobble tell you?
That it’s still moving, and that’s the more urgent of the two findings.
Push on it — from the dock, not from a ladder or the water. A piling that gives, springs back, or shifts underfoot when someone walks that section has lost its grip in the soil. That is not a piling that has settled into a new position; it’s a piling that will keep working its hole larger with every tide, every wake, and every load you put on the dock.
Movement gets worse. It does not get better. There is no version of this where the sand packs back in and the piling re-seats.
What about the part you can’t see?
This is where most of it lives. Below the waterline, three things happen in a storm:
- Scour takes sand from around the base, exactly where the piling needs confinement most. Same problem hits seawalls, and we cover it in seawall scour after a storm.
- Debris impact — a floating dock section, a boat, a tree — hits a piling hard enough to crack or split it below the surface.

None of this is visible from the deck. That’s not a scare tactic, it’s just the geometry of the thing.
When should you stop using the dock?
Stop and get it looked at if any of these are true:
- A piling moves when pushed, or the dock shifts underfoot.
- A piling’s waterline is now out of line with its neighbors.
- Framing has pulled away from a piling, or fasteners have backed out.
- Any section feels different than it did before the storm.
- The water came up over the dock and you haven’t had it checked.
That last one catches people. A dock that was submerged has had uplift forces applied to every connection and scour applied to every piling base, and it can come through looking untouched. “Looks fine” is a description of the decking, not an assessment of the structure.
And the general safety rule from the first days after a storm still applies: don’t inspect anything from the water, don’t get on a structure you’re unsure of, and treat any electrical on the dock as live until an electrician says otherwise. What’s actually fixable?
More than owners usually expect, and the answer depends entirely on why the piling moved.
A sound piling that lost soil grip is one problem. A piling that’s cracked, split, bored, or soft at the waterline is a different one. Sometimes a piling gets reset or supplemented; sometimes it comes out and a new one goes in; sometimes the honest answer is that the dock’s pilings are simply at the end of their life and the storm was the messenger. What doesn’t work is waiting to see. A piling that’s moving is a piling whose hole is getting bigger, and the repair only gets larger and more expensive from here.
